Ways Of Life For The Future.

As many probably already know the economy is getting worse every day. Instead of babbling about that I am going to tell you 10 skills that you may want in the future.

1.Seed Saving And Organic Gardening: You should know how to garden and save seeds. There are a lot of people who don't like to eat all of the Genetically Modified Foods so you may be able to make some money by organic gardening.

2.Food Processing And Preservation: As times get tougher it will be increasingly more and more likely that you will learn how to do things that you havn't done before. Eventually people will start using the summer growing season wisely enough to have food for the winter. Learning how to brew beer from mead or vinegar and the like would be a good trade to know because people will want to drink in hard times.

3.Hunting Fishing And Gathering: Yes, living near or in the country where you can hunt, fish, and gather is what people did a really long time ago but it is enough to support a family and a good trade. Before things get to rough people who like this path would want to have offline guides(Yes, on paper) explaining things such as lists of edible plants with pictures, repairing weapons, trapping, etc. You may also want to know how to hunt/fish if you have never done it before. If you have multiple guides I'm pretty sure that they would be a good trade item when things get ugly.

4.Animal Husbandry: The first four categories are related to food production.  Without food you can not survive.  Just gaining knowledge of one of these categories will give you an invaluable skill to thrive in a post-apocalyptic world.  knowledge of animal husbandry can provide endless amounts of sustainable meat, eggs, and milk to you and your folk.

5.Construction: Construction skills will be very important in a shattered civilization.  These skills, especially without power tools, are not something you learn overnight.  If you have some basic skills it may be worth learning a few techniques for building small structures with crude hand tools.  There are many books teaching anyone how to build basic cabins, sheds, and composting outhouses. Remember: You can't do the job withour the tool.

6.Alternative Energy: People who can make their own windmills or other form of alternative energy will be able to charge batteries and much more. How much would somone trade to use their electronics again? Also there are ways to make fuel different than modern methods. Having the knowledge of how to make fuel would allow you to travel by vehicle again.

7.Water Purification: Without electricity and other modern conviences people will have to know how to make water safe. In the olden days people would turn water into beer which made it safe. Water filters and purification tablets will be good for a while but eventually they won't work anymore. Find some books that tell you how to purify your water through natural ways. There may be wars over water soon with Asia using so much of it.

8.Basic First Aid and Natural Medicine: This is another skill that can take years to develop and learn, but that will be crucial when supply lines of pharmaceuticals are cut off and hospitals are over-run. Knowledge of growing herbal gardens for making medicine at home will prove to be very important.  Learning basic procedures for stitching wounds, CPR, and more will also be of great assistance. Being the local doctor with a natural medicine chest is a prestigious position and would help many people.

9.Mechanics: Mechanics for cars, motorcycles, tractors and other machinery will likely be in high demand.  In addition, bicycle mechanics will also be in higher demand with fuel harder to come by. These are also skills that are not learned over night, but it will be wise to at least have access to books or how-to videos if you have alternative energy for watching them.(The internet may not work though)

10.Soap And Candles: Many people will need soap to stay clean and candles to see. Learning how to make these things wouldn't be that hard to do and it will be needed greatly.

These things aren't going to happen for sure but it is very likely and having the knowledge won't hurt.
